Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. While a small child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by word associations. Ford was first attracted to acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
